Climate change is intensifying droughts, floods, and water scarcity, making robust, low-energy, and ecologically sound adaptation strategies essential. Nature-based Solutions (NbS) offer such strategies by harnessing natural processes to restore ecosystems, enhance resilience, and provide societal benefits. Water-related NbS include wetlands, river restoration, floodplain reconnection, and sustainable drainage systems that improve water quality, supply, biodiversity, and climate regulation.

Within this framework, Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) plays a key role by intentionally replenishing aquifers. By storing water underground, MAR mitigates over-exploitation, prevents land subsidence and seawater intrusion, and supports groundwater-dependent ecosystems. Combining NbS and MAR generates synergies such as pre-treatment of recharge water, enhanced infiltration, habitat creation, and landscape restoration. Achieving measurable biodiversity gains remains a central challenge and research frontier.

This workshop, organised as part of the WAT-CHANGE Seasonal School, explores how NbS and MAR together strengthen water resilience and climate adaptation.

Registration: Participation is free, online or in person, upon registration at giacomo.vescovo@santannapisa.it (max 100 online participants; only 10 in-person places remaining). Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Webinar link will be shared on Tuesday, 4 November
